Choral Artistry from Virginia's Capital

In the fall of 2007, James River Singers premiered I Am In Need of Music by Washington, DC-based composer William Bradley Roberts. This piece was commissioned in memory of Sharon Peebles Manson and was made possible through memorial contributions given in her honor. Sharon was a key figure in sustaining James River Singers as a vibrant arts organization through her leadership on the Board and as a singer in the alto section. Her love for JRS, her pursuit of excellence, and her dedication to choral singing was unsurpassed. Her death leaves a palpable void for all of us in the James River Singers family. Our sincere appreciation to the many donors who graciously honored Sharon through their contributions to her memorial fund.
Please join us for our spring concerts on April 19th and 20th as we present music that will nourish your soul, please your ear, relax your body, and make your toes tap.
The James River Singers are pleased to announce the 2007-2008
season:
SPRING 2008
Night and Day - works by J. S. Bach, Johannes Brahms, William Bradley Roberts, Eric Whitacre, Cole Porter, Waller & Brooks, George & Ira Gershwin and Jerome Kern.
Images of night and day have long inspired poets and the art and popular music composers who set their texts. This concert juxtaposes colorful works by a variety of classical composers with choral arrangements of signature pieces by a few of the great American "art song" composers of the 1930's and 40's.
Saturday, April 19th, 7:00 p.m., First Presbyterian Church, 4602 Cary Street Road, Richmond, VA
Sunday, April 20th, 5:00 p.m., St.
Mark's Episcopal Church,
520 N. Boulevard, Richmond, VA
From the Baltic Sea - works by Arvo Pärt, Veljo Tormis, Sergei Rachmaninoff, and Jaako Mäntyjärvi, plus the premiere of "I Am in Need of Music" by William Roberts, a work recently commissioned by the James River Singers in honor of long-time singer and Board member Sharon Peebles Manson.
The countries clustered around the Baltic Sea are as different from one another as the various lands and histories that stretch away behind them in numerous directions. One striking similarity among them, however, is their amazingly rich choral traditions, with which those of us in the West have only become acquainted since the dissolution of the Soviet Empire. The James River Singers will bring to you the sounds, colors and flavors of the Baltic region through choral works by a few of its most significant composers.
Saturday, November 17th, 7:00 p.m., First Presbyterian Church, 4602 Cary Street Road, Richmond, VA
Sunday, November 18th, 5:00 p.m., St.
Mark's Episcopal Church,
520 N. Boulevard, Richmond, VA
